Ryan Fenton made it a three-peat at the Family YMCA of Los Alamos’ Firecracker 5K.
Fenton, who lives in Albuquerque but runs for and goes to school at New Mexico State University, was again the top finisher at the annual race, sponsored by the YMCA. Fenton was 47 seconds better than runner-up Blake Wood to take his third consecutive Firecracker 5K title.
The race is run on Independence Day, following a course starting at the YMCA’s main complex on Iris Street, down Canyon Road and back.
Fenton was the only runner to break the 17-minute mark in 2012. While he didn’t accomplish that feat this year, his time of 17 minutes, 57 seconds was the only sub-18 minute finish.
On the women’s side, Elizabeth Turner of Los Alamos defeated 2012 champion Adrienne Larson to take this year’s title. Turner clocked in at 20:31, almost a minute better than runner-up Larson’s time of 21:25.
This year’s Firecracker 5K included 171 runners, down slightly from last year’s total of 175 entries.
