Nearly 50 competitors took part in Saturday’s Los Alamos Fencing Club Team Tournament.The tournament, which was held at the Family YMCA of Los Alamos’ gymnasium, drew 11 epee teams and six foil teams from New Mexico and El Paso, Texas.“This is by far the biggest (team tournament) we’ve ever had,” said Tom Hill of the Los Alamos fencing club, one of the event organizers.Hill, along with teammates Ivar Martin and Dominic Peterson, helped the LAFC Pops epeeists to a second place finish in team competition.The Pops edged Texas Excaliber 45-44, with Peterson scoring the final touch in the last bout of a nip-and-tuck contest to get to the semifinals.LAFC topped Duke City’s Pirates 45-40, with all three team members holding their own against the Pirates’ Toby Tolley, the top epeeist in the state.Team Byrd of Duke City Fencers were led by John Arnold, who scored the last two touches to seal the team victory.Arnold also led DCF to a big win in the foil final, beating University of Texas-El Paso 45-19.Complete results for the tournament, fenced in a relay format, can be found on the LAFC’s website, www.geocities.com/lafencingclub.
