Los Alamos Fencing Club had three qualify for the United States Summer Nationals over the weekend. The New Mexico Division held its qualifying meet Saturday in Santa Fe. At the event, Farida Ismail, Seth Longo and Zack Kenyon all fared well enough to move onto Summer Nationals. The Summer Nationals are scheduled for June 28-July 7 in San Jose, Calif.Ismail advanced to the Summer Nationals in Division II and III women’s epee, cadet and youth-14 women’s epee.Kenyon qualified to compete in the Division II and III men’s epee.Longo, meanwhile, qualified for Division II and III men’s epee, cadet, and youth-14 men’s epee. Longo also qualified for youth-14 men’s foil.“This was Seth’s first fencing competition, and to qualify for five events is remarkable,” LAFC coach Tom Hill said. “His performance at the Divisionals attracted a lot of attention.”Hill himself has also picked up a nod to Summer Nationals. Hill scored well enough at the United States Fencing Association North America Cup, which was held in Chicago recently. In the open epee tournament, held in conjunction with the Divisionals, Longo placed 17th and Ismail 20th out of 20 fencers.Hill said he was impressed with Ismail’s aggressive style she displayed at the Divisionals and thinks she has a chance for a good showing at Summer Nationals.
