ck from a rough outing in the preliminary round to win the beginning fencing class tournament last week.
Gulley topped his three teammates to win the tournament, held at the YMCA.
The tournament began with a round of pool bouts before the fence-offs. Pool didn’t go so hot for Gulley, but he turned his fortunes around quickly.
“After fencing poorly in the pools, Steve came back to take first on sheer grit and determination, despite being the smallest and youngest member in the class,” Los Alamos Fencing Club coach Tom Hill said. “That’s why his teammates call him ‘Mr. Scrappy.’”
Ben Barlow was second in the beginners’ tournament, Tom Barlow finished third and Marshall Dillon was fourth.
