Feds back transportation planning for Valles Caldera

Monitor Staff Report

The Valles Caldera National Preserve has won a $200,000 grant from the Federal Transit Authority (FTA) to help improve public access to the park.

In an announcement Friday, U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman said he had written to FTA Administrator James Simpson earlier this year, supporting the Valles Caldera grant application under the agency’s Alternative Transportation in Parks and Public Lands Program.

Funding will be used to plan for future public access, capacity and transportation from entrances to facilities, trails, fishing streams, picnic areas, visitor center, educational facilities, and to design and selected the modes of transportation to be employed.

“This funding will be used to contract with professional transportation and recreation planners to help improve public access and enjoyment of the Valles Caldera preserve,” Bingaman said

The preserve is an 89,000-acre public property, west of Los Alamos, acquired in 2000. The Valles Caldera Trust was established by Congress to manage the ranch and develop programs for public access and use.
