Fashion Maven: A wish list that lasts a wardrobe lifetime

-A A +A

By Alexandra Hehlen

I’ve made you a list and I’ve checked it twice. It’s the time of year for you ladies to start making Christmas wish lists. This year though, I have derived one for you that includes all of the key pieces of clothing that, by all means, should not be missing from your wardrobe. Of course, you should already have most of these pieces, but you may not have all five of the pieces that are essential to a basic wardrobe.
Rule number one: a wardrobe is nothing without jeans. The variety is endless, as is the fit, but every person has the perfect pair of jeans waiting out there somewhere for them. Dark washes with a tapered or skinny leg are always chic, professional, contemporary and go with almost anything. The heinous “mom jeans” should not exist in your closet. Its light wash and high rise yield to an unflattering figure and a much too casual appearance.
Rule number two: every closet should consist of two basic types of tops. The first would be a crisp, white, button-down shirt.
It can be worn under blazers, as a casual cover-up in the summer, or with a pair of dark jeans. The second type of shirt is black or white, in any material. It acts as a basic staple for any outfit and allows for a more colorful or unique piece to make a statement.
Rule number three: although not worn in winter unless with leggings, a skirt is necessary. An A-line skirt is one that floats out from the hip and ends just above or at the knee and is flattering to almost any figure. Pencil skirts, on the other hand are essentials. Just make sure that they are not too tight and that you can sit and bend in them.
Rule number four: you should have two basic types of shoes in your closet. Especially in winter, a boot is essential. Heeled or not, boots can instantly spiff up your outfit, making it look even more chic. Boots, especially ankle boots, can be also worn in the summer. Of course, a pair of comfortable, lasting heels is a no-brainer. Choose a color that can go with many outfits, like black, gray, or beige.
Rule number five: every wardrobe needs a warm jacket and a blazer. And no, I’m not talking about ski jackets, but rather pea coats. Pea coats tend to be a bit roomy, so you can still wear a sweater underneath. Try finding one that is in a fun color or is tailored so that it’s figure flattering.
Now that you know what you still need, you’d better put it on your Christmas wish list. Santa Claus may be no fashionista, but he can sure make wishes come true.
