The third annual Pajarito Trail Runs Festival will take place on Oct. 10 at Pajarito Ski Area from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. The events will feature 10k and 15 Mile trail races, kids’ runs and activities and an opportunity to enjoy a display of fall colors.

Registration for 10K and 15 Mile races is open until Oct. 10 at www.active.com.

Registration for 10k is $35 and for 15 Mile race is $40 and includes an active.com fee.

There will be race day registration for an additional charge.

Runners will get a tech T-shirt, a finisher award, aid station support, a chance to win cool prizes at the raffle and a goody bag.

Check-in is from 8-8:45 a.m. the day of the race. The start for both runs is at 9 a.m.

The course follows a single track through mixed conifer and aspen forests up the east side of Pajarito Mountain (Lower Aspenola and Aspenola trails), ascends to the top of Aspen lift, follows the ridge and descends on the single track on the west side (Aspen for Trouble and Half Aspen trails). 10K finishes at the lodge while the 15-mile course continues out and back on the Guaje Canyon Trail through Canada Bonita meadow to Guaje Canyon Overlook. There will be four well-stocked aid stations at 3, 6, 9 and 12 miles.

Kids’ fun runs will feature a 1K trail run and a 100-yard dash. The recommended donation for the kids’ races is $2 and children will receive a ribbon and a treat. Other activities for kids will include making things with nature, a forest treasure hunt and face painting.

There will be post-race snack food for racers and a generous raffle.

Pajarito Café will be open for breakfast and lunch from 8-2 p.m.

The event is organized by Moms on Trails, the local chapter of Moms in Motion.  Moms in Motion is an international organization of fitness teams for women with the motto of Fitness, Fun and Philanthropy. Each team learns about fitness by preparing for an event while giving back to the community by supporting local non-profit organizations.

The essence of Moms in Motion emerges from the camaraderie and support of a team working together toward a common fitness goal and philanthropic cause. For more information go to www.momsinmotion.com.

This year, the proceeds from the race will again go to Pajarito Environmental Education Center (PEEC), a nonprofit organization that strives to create hands-on learning opportunities for people of all ages to discover the rich natural heritage of Northern New Mexico.

Last year, the Pajarito Trail Fest yielded $3,000 for PEEC, which significantly reduced tuition for their popular summer Nature Odyssey camps.
