Saturday, the downtown area will feature a few unusual sights – a sand pile, a pit of soapy foam, a few robots and some shiny cars.

All these unique additions come courtesy of the Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce’s Chamberfest.

From 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, the conventional routine will be put on hold for some fun the whole community can enjoy.

Actually, the fun begins at 5 p.m. with  the Chamber’s banquet Friday at Central Avenue Grill.

Additionally, at 7 p.m. Friday the Los Alamos Summer Concert Series at Central Avenue and Main Street. Nathan and The Zydeco Cha Chas will perform.

The enjoyment continues through Saturday.

Los Alamos National Bank will sponsor the sand pile while two different car shows – the Chamberfest Hot Rod Car Show and the Atomic City Corvette’s car show – are also downtown.

VaLynn Purvis’ Party to Go will offer its pit of bubbles and the Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Hazmat team will display their robots.

The Nomads, a local classic rock band, will perform from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at Central and Main Street, as part of the Los Alamos Summer Concert Series.

This is on top of all the activities and services participating businesses will provide.

Jeremy Varela, events and marketing coordinator at the chamber, said, “It’s a community event … to help kick off the summer.”

He added there should be more than 50 locations for residents to check out local businesses.

“It’s a fun day to just be outside,” Varela said. “Just enjoying the down town and having fun with the community.”

In recognition of the county’s 60th anniversary, people are encouraged to dig in their closets and arrive at Chamberfest dressed in the clothes from different eras.

Varela said it allows participants to be a little creative as well as to get dressed up.

Natalie Morgan, marketing coordinator at Los Alamos National Bank, which is a major sponsor for Chamberfest, said the event  provides for both local residents and businesses.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for local businesses to showcase themselves … (it’s) a great opportunity to network with local business owners,” she said.

Del Norte Credit Union and Zia Credit Union are also major sponsors for the event.

Chamberfest, Morgan added, is a “great opportunity for the community to show their support to local businesses by attending the event.”

Plus, she said, “It is a face to face opportunity for business owners to talk to one another … it’s a good opportunity to network between business.

“It’s fun for people to walk around and see what Los Alamos has to offer.”
