ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — The search has ended for a man who escaped from the custody of federal authorities in Espanola.
Authorities say 28-year-old Rafael Angel Juarez-Rodriguez was captured during a traffic stop in Taos late Tuesday after hitching a ride in Espanola from a woman.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents had initially arrested Juarez-Rodriguez in Taos on Tuesday afternoon and were on their way to arrest a second man in Espanola when Juarez-Rodriguez escaped.
ICE officials say the Mexican-born Juarez-Rodriguez was in the country illegally and escaped from an SUV and ran toward the desert behind a high school.
Schools in the area were briefly put on lockdown as a precaution.
New Mexico State Police and other agencies helped in the search for Juarez-Rodriguez.
