Boys State and Girls State will be held in June at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales.
Los Alamos High School juniors can receive three college credit hours for participating. The credit hours are fully transferable to other colleges.
Boys State and Girls State are programs of the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary that supply a civics education.
In the week-long program that students learn government from the ground up by total immersion in the process by joining a political party, selecting candidates, campaigning, getting elected and serving in office.
The boys and girls act as mayors, sheriffs, judges, legislators, prosecutors as district attorneys and many others.
Some innovative ideas for legislation have come from Boys and Girls State.
In addition to the government process, there are presentations on the history of the American flag, career opportunities in law, law enforcement, college and public safety, and a chance to meet and talk with government officials.
This year, Girls State is June 5-10. Boys State will be held June 12-17.
Applications are available at the LAHS counselor’s office.
There is an $25 registration fee but all other expenses are handled by the American Legion Department of New Mexico.
