Organizers of the newest cyclist-centric festival to hit Los Alamos — “Rock-n-Roll EnduroFest” — are hoping that the event will gain speed among festival goers with many family-friendly activities for cyclists and non-cyclists alike, including guided rides, kids races, live music, microbreweries and bike races.

The event is slated for Aug. 1-3 at Pajarito Mountain Ski Area.

“The trails surrounding Los Alamos and the Pajarito Mountain Ski Area trail system are mostly an undiscovered gem for all types of mountain biking,” said organizer Steve Watts. “We wanted to showcase our trails, our people, and our orientation around fun and adrenalin sports by putting on this family friendly event. We also enjoy good food and handcrafted beer, so we had to sneak these into the weekend’s events.”

The concept of “enduro” originated from France and is based upon racing downhill and on non-timed uphills. All-exhibition enduro racers at the festival will get to experience four timed runs, which begin on the 10,440-foot high crest of Pajarito Mountain and onto the freeride and XC trails which connect to the singletrack set in Los Alamos below.

For beginning cyclists, guided rides will be available on county trails where rides are not timed and cyclists can ride at their own pace. Enduro skill seminars along with industry and retail expos, clinics and vendors will be available at the event.

The registration deadline for both the Enduro race and guided rides is Aug. 1. Registration can be completed online at newmexicosportsonline.com; click on “location” and find “Los Alamos.”

EnduroFest kicks off 6 p.m. Aug. 1 with kids’ races at Ashley Pond, with prizes for all participants. Adults 21 and over can enjoy a cool craft beer at the beer garden and live music starting at 7 p.m. with Austin-based band, Shinyribs.

Beginning at 10 a.m. Aug. 2, Enduro Exhibition races and Guided Rides will gear up at the Pajarito Mountain lodge.

After the races, participants in both the Exhibition Enduro and Guided Rides will receive a commemorative pint glass for use at the festival’s brew tent and includes a pint of local craft beer (21 and over only), discounted barbecue food and entry to the event, which includes an all ages concert.

Finally, on Aug. 3, another event will be held in Los Alamos. The Valles Caldera PyroClassic. The PyroClassic will be one of the most scenic and challenging mountain bike races in the state as the race courses will cover the landscape of the Valles Caldera National Preserve, valley meadows, and climb over the flanks of the volcanic upheaval of 11,000 foot Redondo Peak. The PyroClassic offers race categories for every level.

Free shuttle service to Pajarito Mountain will be available on Aug. 2, compliments of Atomic City Transit.

Pick up location will be from Sullivan Field parking lot west of Los Alamos High School.

Rock-n-Roll EnduroFest is sponsored by Los Alamos County, Pajarito Mountain Ski Area, Los Alamos Tuffriders IMBA Chapter, the New Mexico Enduro Cup, and the Valles Caldera PyroClassic XC Mountain Bike Race. Like on Facebook at facebook.com/losalamosendurofest to receive updates on events.
