Employees Survive SOC Transition

Security employees tasked with protecting Los Alamos National Laboratory can breathe a collective sigh of relief now that the transition period for its new contract is settled.
Despite the contract’s shorter term, scaled back scope of work and lower dollar amount, SOC has announced that it will not layoff any employees.
“We went through a transition period the last few weeks of 2010, based on a transition plan approved by LANS (Los Alamos National Security), and it was much less painful than we had anticipated it would be,” said SOC General Manager Ken Freeman. “No one was separated from the company involuntarily.”
SOC has averaged 500-550 employees over the last five or six years, Freeman said, adding that just a “handful” of employees took advantage of a voluntary separation offer in which SOC provided severance packages, which was included in the transition process.
Freeman said that while the $251 million contract is a lower dollar amount, about $12 million, that number is deceiving in that the new contract’s structure is different.
