Los Alamos baseball standout Jake Downs is scheduled to play the North-South big school All-Star series, which gets going today.
Downs, one of the key cogs for the Hilltoppers during their big 2014 season, was selected last month for the All-Star team.
He was the only player from District 2-4A to make the North roster.
For much of the season, Downs hit in the No. 2 slot for Los Alamos, helping set the table for the powerful top of the Hilltopper lineup. He supported the Hilltoppers as they scored a whopping 148 runs in 12 district games this season.
Downs was a pitcher and infielder for his career at Los Alamos. He graduated from the program in May.
The All-Stars from around the state are selected from the top graduating seniors. Selections are made by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association.
Downs is the second Hilltopper to be named to an All-Star series so far this summer. Kiana Zerr of Los Alamos’ softball program made the North All-Star team — that series was last weekend in Farmington.
Last season, Los Alamos went 22-7 and clinched its sixth consecutive 2-4A title. Los Alamos advanced to the second round of the Class 4A playoffs, but was knocked out in that round by the Goddard Rockets.
The Rockets, who made the 4A state championship game, will be well represented on the South All-Star team this weekend. Among the four Rockets scheduled to appear is Josh Wagoner, the left-handed pitcher who outdueled Hilltopper ace Jared Mang in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs.
The North-South series will be today and Saturday at Apodaca Park in Las Cruces.
