HAWTHORNE – Donelle Maurine Carson Hawthorne, 89, a resident of Santa Fe, N.M., passed away Thursday, May 22, 2008, at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Santa Fe, NM. Mrs. Hawthorne was born July 5, 1918, to Grant Ernest and Gladys May (Keith) Carson of Benton, Iowa. She graduated from Albuquerque High School in June 1935 and had attended First Christian Church on Broadway during this time. Upon graduation, she attended a Christian college in California before returning to Albuquerque to attend the University of New Mexico.
During World War II, she was featured in the Saturday Evening Post’s story “So you went to Washington,” as one of the girls that worked at the Pentagon during the war. Mrs. Hawthorne met her future husband, George Robert “Colonel” Hawthorne while working at Sandia Base. They were married April 2, 1947, at the Chapel on Sandia Base which Captain Hawthorne moved from Bruns Hospital in Santa Fe. In 1948, she accepted a position in Los Alamos in telephone communications, where she worked for the next 40 years.
Donelle was the original working mother to her five children, always finding time for summers at the Bear Springs cabin, bell-choir practice and many other musical and athletic activities that were made special by her efforts. She was a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary and had served as the president of New Mexico’s auxiliary. Mrs. Hawthorne was a political volunteer and member of the Republican National Women’s Club. She had also served as a deacon at the First Presbyterian Church in Santa Fe. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, “Colonel” Hawthorne; their children: Joyce Ziesenis and her husband Greg of Pensacola, Fla.; Janet Parker and her husband John of Bountiful, Utah; Judith Hawthorne of Santa Fe, N.M.; Robert Hawthorne and his wife Angela of Albuquerque, N.M.; and David Hawthorne of Placitas, N.M.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and a fifth great-grandchild arriving soon; brother, Myron Carson; and sister, Barbara Simmons. Mrs. Hawthorne is preceded in death by one grandson, her brother Leo and her sister Doris.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at Fairview Memorial Park, 700 Yale Blvd SE, Albuquerque with Chaplain Warren Chapman presiding. Services are entrusted to Daniels Family Funeral Services, 1100 Coal Ave SE
