Domestic partnerships

-A A +A
By The Staff

Dear Editor,

In a recent letter to the editor, Mr. Kuropatwinski suggests that Gov. Richardson’s support of domestic partnership rights is given out of obligation to Hollywood interests. While I neither desire nor am able to address the governor’s motivation, I would like to say something about the domestic partnership legislation that our legislature will be considering.

We moved to New Mexico to be closer to family who had previously relocated to Santa Fe. We chose Los Alamos in particular to provide our son with an excellent public education in a small-town setting. Since arriving here, we have met other same-sex couples, with and without children, who have lived in the state for much longer than we have, some of them for their entire lives. Far from being outsiders, we are your neighbors and our children attend the same schools as yours.

Although my partner and I have gone to the trouble and expense of drafting a number of legal documents, such as wills and medical powers of attorney, there remain gaps in the protection we have created for our family. Furthermore, I worry that at the times when we most need this protection, times of illness and crisis, the need to produce the proper documentation to have our relationship recognized will create an additional, unnecessary barrier to appropriate care.
