Discovery Channel will be conducting its filing for the upcoming Profiles Series about Los Alamos schools in two locations on Friday.
Beginning at 8:45 a.m., the channel will be at the Mountain Elementary School to film different classes.
At 10 a.m., the channel will shift its focus to the high school and Los Alamos Schools Chief Financial Officer John Wolfe said there is a full schedule.
Classes scheduled to be filmed include mixed choir, computer art, NJROTC, sports medicine. Robotics 2, symphonic orchestra, symphonic band, AP Calculus and physical conditioning
In the afternoon, the Discovery Channel will shoot interviews.
Scheduled to be interviewed are superintendent Gene Schmidt, high school principal Sandy Warnock and student Shannon Burns. Mountain Elementary principal Gerry Washburn also is expected to be interviewed.
Washburn said the Mountain School was honored to be able to participate in the Discovery Channel filming.
“There are so many incredible things going on in the school district and we hope to be able to highlight just some of the variety of educational opportunities available to students that attend Los Alamos Public Schools,” Washburn said. “We believe that opportunities in the arts, opportunities to experience science, rather than read about it, and excellence in teaching in our classrooms is what makes the district unique. We hope that our small contribution will offer some insight into just how we meet the needs of all the children that attend our schools.”
Although he will not be on location Friday, Academy Award winner Louis Gossett, Jr., will narrate. Gossett won a best supporting actor award in 1982 for his role as a drill sergeant in “An Officer and a Gentleman.”
Crews from the Discovery Channel will be shooting enough footage to come up with six to eight minutes. The cable channel’s directors and producers will then produce a one-minute spot highlighting what is great about Los Alamos schools.
“The spots will be seen on different networks like MSNBC, Fox News, CNN and Bravo,” Wolfe said. “It will be great exposure for us.”
The spots also will be distributed on the internet through Google, YouTube, AOL video and myspace.
