Josephine Boyer started an ornament decorating event as a social get-together 12 years ago in Vienna, since then it has evolved into a fundraiser for different charities.
The ornament-painting party will be held for the first time in Los Alamos from noon-6 p.m. Saturday at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.
All the proceeds will benefit World Youth Day Pilgrims at IHMC. World Youth Day, Boyer explained, was started by Pope John Paul II. During the event, young Catholics from all over the world attend. The purpose of the event is to bring about new evangelization of the Catholic Church through its young people. The next World Youth Day will be held July 15-20 in Sydney, Australia and 23 IHMC members are planning to attend.
During the fundraiser, Boyer said parents can drop their children off at the church to be supervised by adults and young adult volunteers.
Children can decorate and paint as many plaster ornaments as they please. In addition, there will be snacks, drinks and a visit from Santa Claus.
"This is a fun way to create ... it's a fun event," Boyer said. "We want to really try and encourage a lot of kids to come."
The cost is $25 for one child and $1 for each additional child in your immediate family.
A registration form and a check can be sent to IHM youth office, 3700 Canyon Road.
