Declare your dog a canine good citizen

An individual’s home insurance rates may increase if they own pets. Some insurance companies are now requiring proof of pet breed, especially if they own a dog breed deemed “aggressive” or an exotic animal.
Some agents and companies may even ask for pictures of the pets in order to finalize a rate.
One way is to fight against this is to have a dog declared a “canine good citizen.”
Started in 1989, the American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizen program focuses on teaching dogs to be well behaved at home and in the community.
CGC’s motto, “Responsible Owners, Well-Mannered Dogs,” says it all. In CGC, dogs are trained and then take a 10-step test to earn the Canine Good Citizen certificate. AKC-approved CGC evaluators administer the CGC test.
AKC has partnered with The Hartford Insurance Company, which now offers policies for homeowners whose dogs carry the CGC label. Hartford will offer both auto and home insurance to AKC dog owners.
“We are proud to align with AKC, a well-respected organization dedicated to responsible dog ownership,” said Andy Napoli, president of consumer markets at The Hartford.
