The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls cross country team passed its first test of the 2010 season with flying colors.
The Hilltoppers knocked off the rest of the 26-team field at Saturday’s University of New Mexico Invitational. The Hilltoppers finished the race with 102 team points, 10 fewer than runner-up La Cueva to take top honors in their first outing of the season.
Veteran Los Alamos runners Victoria Honnell and Megan Reader were both among the top 13 finishers at Saturday’s race, held at the University of New Mexico North Golf Course in Albuquerque. The race was not only one of the largest but one of the toughest races Los Alamos will compete in this season.
In Saturday’s boys race, the Hilltoppers finished second among 29 competing schools with their total of 107 points. Not surprisingly the Albuquerque Academy Chargers, a nationally-ranked program, cruised to victory Saturday with 44 points.
Tim Wermer and Daniel Roybal finished 14th and 15th, one second apart from each other to lead Los Alamos’ effort.
In the girls race, Academy finished in fourth place 156 points back. Julia Foster, the top returning runner in the state, won the individual honors at UNM.
