Kyle Pittman led a big effort by the Los Alamos Hilltopper cross country team at Saturday’s boys Nike Cross Nationals Southwest Regional.
Pittman, who just two weeks earlier took his first state Class AAAA individual championship, finished fourth at the Southwest Regional meet, held Saturday in Tempe, Ariz. With a time of 15 minutes, 24 seconds to lead the Hilltoppers to a fifth-place finish.
The Albuquerque Academy Charger team, however, proved Saturday that it was still among the elite teams in the nation, however, winning the Southwest Regional with a score of 156 points, 16 points better than its nearest competitor.
The Los Alamos boys finished with 205 team points.
Gareth Gilna finished 10th for Los Alamos at Saturday’s race, a precursor to the NCN championship meet in which Los Alamos finished second in 2007. Gilna ran a strong time of 15:41 to crack the top 10.
Austin Jacobson finished third among the Los Alamos contingent with his time of 16:25.
Also at Saturday’s meet, the Hilltopper girls finished 18th in their competition with 453 team points.
Megan Reader was again the top finisher for Los Alamos Saturday, as she was two weeks ago in the state title race. Reader finished 47th overall with a time of 19:50.
Hannah Little (85th, 20:24) and Victoria Honnell (95th, 20:42) also broke into the top 100 for Los Alamos individually.
In all, 24 boys teams and 25 girls teams took part in the regional race. Teams from New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming and Arizona competed Saturday.
