As expected, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls cross country teams were the big winners at Friday’s District 2AAAA championship.
Los Alamos rolled over all comers at the district title race, hosted by Santa Fe High, with the Hilltopper girls picking up a perfect score of 15 and the Hilltopper boys just missing out on duplicating that same feat.
The Hilltopper boys finished with a total of 19 points, taking nine of the top 11 individual spots Friday — this year, a rule was passed allowing teams to run nine athletes at the district meets statewide.
Meanwhile, the Hilltopper girls swept the top eight spots and placed all nine of their runners in the top 10.
It was the third straight season the Hilltopper girls had scored a perfect 15 at the district meet. Their closest competitors, Bernalillo, finished with 65 points.
Both teams will now advance to the Class AAAA championship meet. Los Alamos’ girls will go in as slight favorites over Albuquerque Academy. On the boys side, Los Alamos will be looking to upset the favored Academy Chargers, a feat they most recently pulled off in 2007.
Individually in the race, freshman Eliana Riciputi earned the District 2AAAA title, holding off teammate Megan Reader, a senior. Riciputi finished with a time of 20:39 to pick up the first district title of her young career.
