The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys cross country team had one of the top finishes of the Division 1 race Friday at the Liberty Bell Invitational in Littleton, Colo.
The Hilltoppers finished third at the Liberty Bell meet, hosted by Heritage High School in Littleton. Paced by Daniel Roybal’s top-20 finish, the Hilltoppers nipped Smoky Hill, Colo., for third place in the race, 184-185.
Despite the big finish for the Hilltoppers, they were still only the second-place finishers among New Mexico schools at the regional prep meet. The powerful crew from Albuquerque Academy cruised to a victory Friday, picking up just 52 points, 47 fewer than runner-up Fort Collins, Colo.
In Friday’s girls race, Los Alamos finished seventh overall with 196 total points, two slots behind arch-rival Academy, which placed fifth in team competition.
For Los Alamos’ Victoria Honnell also picked up a top-20 finish with her time of 19:46.
Both the Hilltopper teams were able to pack well behind Roybal and Honnell, with just three places separating the next three Los Alamos boys’ runners and Jennifer Mooday, Megan Reader and Emily Pittman finishing within 11 seconds of each other in the girls race.
