Community Services Director Stephani Johnson announced Thursday that Los Alamos County has terminated its contract with The Art Center at Fuller Lodge.
Under the current contract, the county has the option to terminate with or without cause, provided that the Art Center is given 10 days notice. The letter of termination was issued Wednesday afternoon and the contract will end Saturday.
A new contractor, Village Arts, had already been selected two weeks ago, and will be ready to provide services at the Center beginning July 1. In the interim, the Community Services Department will have the responsibility to manage the Art Center.
Johnson emphasized that the county will make every effort to reduce impacts to current arts-related programs and activities planned for April and May. The county will continue to operate the exhibit hall and art shop.
“We understand how important the Art Center is to our community and tourism in Los Alamos,” she said, “so we felt it was in the best interest of our residents for us to have oversight of the Center for the next two months.”
Johnson said she will evaluate services and staffing options within the next week.
More information will be released to the public and posted to the county’s Web page at www.losalamosnm.us as soon as it is available.
Art Center Executive Director John Werenko was unavailable for comment.
