Council meeting back on regular schedule

This week’s county council meeting goes back to the regularly scheduled meeting day of Tuesday. The meeting on Nov. 3 was held on a Monday because Election Day fell on Nov. 4. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Community Building and will be televised on PAC-8.

There are a few items on the consent agenda this week. The first is an amendment to the FY 2009 salary plan for the detention shift supervisor. A motion is being presented to council that suggests that council approve the amended FY 2009 salary plan to reflect the appropriate title and salary grade for the detention shift supervisor.

The second consent agenda item seeks approval of the amendment to the FY 2008 audit contract. The motion asks that council approve an amendment to the FY 2008 audit contract with Moss Adams LLP, the county’s auditors, in an amount not to exceed $9,000 plus any applicable GRT.

The third item on the consent agenda is a certification of canvassing committee results. The motion suggests that council accept the results of the canvassing committee.

Two public hearings will also be held on Tuesday night. The first one concerns a new liquor license application that was filed by Dolin Distillery, Inc., d/b/a Don Quixote Winery, located at 236 Rio Bravo in Los Alamos.

The first order of business for Tuesday night will be a presentation and request for approval of the animal shelter project schematic design.

In addition, Police Chief Torpy will make a presentation to council regarding the Child Helmet Safety Act. Since the skate park has opened, there has been an increase in the public’s interest about the mandatory use of protective helmets by young people. The discussion will focus on two areas: First, an overview of the New Mexico Child Helmet Safety Act will be provided to aid in the understanding of the philosophy, intent and scope of the Act, and second, Chief Torpy will talk about the police department’s compliance initiatives and enforcement policy regarding the safety helmets.

The last order of business will be a presentation to council by Assistant County Administrator Anthony Mortillaro regarding the Los Alamos County 2009 Federal agenda.
