Cooler, Wetter Weather Set To Move In

-A A +A

The National Weather Service has issued the following special statement regarding the forecast:

A BIG CHANGE FOR WETTER AND COOLER WEATHER UNDERWAY...

WE HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING DRY AND WARM WEATHER IN RECENT DAYS ACROSS NORTHERN AND CENTRAL NEW MEXICO. IN FACT... RECORD HIGHS HAVE BEEN BROKEN ACROSS SEVERAL EASTERN LOCATIONS. BUT THAT IS BEGINNING TO CHANGE.

A STRONG BACK DOOR COLD FRONT IS BLASTING INTO NORTHEAST NEW MEXICO EARLY THIS MORNING. TEMPERATURES WILL BE 15 TO 25 DEGREES COOLER THAN SATURDAY IN THE NORTHEAST. IN ADDITION... MOISTURE WILL INCREASE MARKEDLY BEHIND THE FRONT. A FEW SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL FORM ACROSS THE NORTHEAST TODAY... FAVORING THE EAST SLOPES OF THE SANGRE DE CRISTO MOUNTAINS.

THE FRONT WILL SLOW ITS PROGRESS SOUTH DURING THE DAY... THEN PICK UP SPEED AGAIN TONIGHT AND MOVE QUICKLY SOUTH AND WEST. THE FRONT WILL SPILL INTO THE RIO GRANDE VALLEY LATER TONIGHT WITH EAST WINDS OF 25 TO 35 MPH AND GUSTS AROUND 45 MPH. LOW LEVEL MOISTURE WILL ALSO POUR INTO THE VALLEY. ISOLATED TO SCATTERED SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL FIRE OVER MOST AREAS MONDAY... WITH SOME OF THE STORMS AROUND THE CONTINENTAL DIVIDE OF THE DRY VARIETY. TEMPERATURES WILL TREND DOWNWARD OVER THE ENTIRE FORECAST AREA.

MEANWHILE A STORM WILL BE TAKING SHAPE OVER UTAH TODAY THEN DEEPEN INTO A CLOSED LOW OVER NORTHERN BAJA CA EARLY IN THE WEEK. THE STORM WILL MOVE EVER SO SLOWLY TO THE EAST LATER IN THE WEEK... MOVING ACROSS NORTHERN MEXICO. THIS TRACK IS A BIT FARTHER SOUTH THAN FORECAST IN RECENT DAYS. NEVERTHELESS... THE STORM WILL PULL MID LEVEL MOISTURE FROM THE GULF OF MEXICO ALL THE WAY TO NEW MEXICO... WHILE LOW LEVEL MOISTURE CONTINUES TO PRESS IN FROM THE NORTH. WITH ALL THIS AVAILABLE MOISTURE WIDESPREAD SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY.

SOME OF THE RAIN COULD BE HEAVY... ESPECIALLY ACROSS THE SOUTHWEST AND SOUTH CENTRAL MOUNTAINS INTO CHAVES COUNTY. THE LEAST RAINFALL MAY END UP BEING IN THE NORTHEAST. WET SNOW WILL FALL ON THE HIGHEST MOUNTAIN PEAKS WITH ONLY SMALL ACCUMULATIONS EXPECTED. GUSTY EAST TO SOUTHEAST WINDS WILL BE COMMON IN THE RIO GRANDE VALLEY THROUGH AT LEAST THE MIDDLE OF THE WEEK... STRONGEST AT NIGHT.
