Funding obtained under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to clear out a World War II-era landfill on LANL property has resulted in a $100 million contract awarded to TerranearPMC, LLC.
The company is a small, disadvantaged business, as recognized by the U.S. Small Business Administration, with one of its offices in Los Alamos.
The work will include removal of about 50,000 cubic yards of rubble (enough to fill a football field to a depth of about 25 feet) and transporting it in Department of Transportation-certified metal bins.
The destination of the containers will either be an industrial landfill, or in the case of waste that tests positive for radioactive residues, to a licensed facility in Utah.
The work must be complete by September 30, 2011. When combined with other ARRA work awarded last year, it will have saved or created 200 full-time jobs, and another almost 500 part-time job opportunities.
