Diamond Drive Phase 4 2011
Last week, crews adjusted the traffic control signs and signal at the Diamond/Canyon intersection to clarify the allowed traffic movements.
Southbound motorists on Diamond Drive approaching the Canyon intersection in the left lane can either turn left onto Canyon or proceed through the intersection in order to turn left onto Trinity. Also, the southbound right lane on Diamond at Canyon is designated as a through lane only.
Commuters who typically use N.M. 502 to access Los Alamos National Laboratory work sites south of the Los Alamos Canyon Bridge are urged to use the Truck Route or Pajarito Road to minimize the traffic volume going through the Diamond/Trinity intersection.
County staff will closely monitor traffic this week and will evaluate the success of the traffic control plan at the end of the week.
Motorists should plan for a minimum delay of 20-30 minutes. Consider adjusting schedules to avoid Diamond Drive during peak travel times; take Atomic City Transit to reduce the number of vehicles on the road; carpool, and, where possible, use alternate routes.
Northbound from the Bridge – No change to last week’s traffic control report. Expect two lanes, with a left turn bay at West Road, through lane, and right turn lane into the hospital parking lot. Two lanes continue northbound with the right lane peeling off to eastbound Trinity. Those in the left lane may turn left onto Trinity or continue northbound through the intersection. Please note: During the evening commute, instead of turning left onto Trinity and causing traffic behind you to stop, please seek an alternate route into Western area. Once past Trinity, one lane continues northbound through the work zone.
Southbound from University Drive – Expect two southbound lanes south of Sandia. The left lane is a through/left turn lane at Canyon Drive and a left turn lane at Trinity Drive. The right lane is the through lane for traffic crossing the bridge. There is a left turn bay at West Road to provide access to the Los Alamos Medical Center.
The Canyon Road driveway into Sullivan Field continues to be closed. Access the First Methodist Church from University Drive through Mesa Field and Sullivan Field parking lots.
Transit: Park & Ride bus stop between Trinity and West Road is now located at Trinity and 39th Street. The southbound Atomic City Transit bus stop on Diamond Drive at the Lemon Lot has been moved to Canyon Road west of the Catholic Church. The bus stop north of Canyon near the High School Jock Lot is closed; use the bus stop near Orange.
Pedestrians: Pedestrians will be directed to the east side of Diamond Drive at West Road. Pedestrians should stay on the east side through the work zone and cross at the overpasses or Sandia/Orange.
Bicyclists: Take a lane or dismount and follow pedestrian path; alternate routes are highly recommended.
High School Students: Available parking in Sullivan Field parking lot has been greatly reduced; use Mesa Field. High School students are asked to access Mesa Field via Sandia / 40th / University and the Duane Smith parking lot via Orange Street.
Work Zone Reminders:
Do not enter the construction boundaries, stay within the provided vehicular or pedestrian access area. Construction areas are closed to the public for obvious safety reasons. Use the queue space provided, take turns merging at the merge point, don’t block intersections, and drive defensively.
Moving established traffic control devices endangers lives and is a crime punishable by a $300 fine and/or 90 days in jail. Please report suspicious activity or suspected tampering to the Police Department by calling 911 or 662-8222.
