The man who fills downtown with music each summer was recognized at a special FAN Club in the Chamber of Commerce offices Wednesday evening.
“What a gas, this is so fun,” said Russ Gordon of the large crowd who gathered to honor and thank him.
This summer his Los Alamos Summer Concert Series is hosting 22 free concerts from May 15 through the end of August. Local, national and international acts are included in the series.
“When I think of Russ, the word ‘community institution’ comes to mind,” Chamber Executive Director Kevin Holsapple said. Holsapple wrote an article for trazzler.com about Gordon and his concert series. “I can’t imagine summer in Los Alamos without it.”
Rep. Jeannette Wallace, R-Los Alamos, Santa Fe and Sandoval counties, attended the FAN Club to support Gordon.
“The Gordons’ Concerts he brings to the community have always been interesting to me in how they draw out all age groups,” Wallace said. “Gordons’ Concerts keeps bringing us together and keeps us here and keeps us working with our neighbors.”
KRSN AM 1490 co-owner David Sutton calls Gordon, “the unofficial mayor of Los Alamos.”
All ages are welcome at the Gordons’ Concerts held around Ashley Pond and at local sponsoring businesses and locations throughout the county.
Chamber Member Services Coordinator Katy Korkos has known Gordon since he had his record and ice cream shop in White Rock some 20 years ago.
“Russ has always been so generous in giving to the community,” she said.
Gordon thanked the crowd, the chamber and especially Los Alamos County, for their support. “Our biggest sponsor is the county and we absolutely couldn’t do this without them,” he said.
Rob Heineman is a local musician and businessman who has known Gordon for some 25 years.
“He’s the heartbeat of Los Alamos as far as I’m concerned,” Heineman said. “He adds to the culture of the community. He brings in world class musicians – Los Alamos is on their tours because of Russ. I don’t know how Russ does it – he eeks by and somehow brings in the best.”
Jolyn McTeigue is a concert supporter who spoke at Wednesday’s event. She appealed for donors to help sponsor the concerts, whether with $5 or $5,000.
The Gordons’ Concerts office is inside the Chamber of Commerce at 109 Central Park Square. For concert information, call 661-4891.
