Workers brave bitter cold wind late Wednesday as they work on the new Judicial-Police-Jail Complex next to the Los Alamos Police Department. Workers begin pouring concrete at the Complex construction site Thursday morning. The groundbreaking for the complex was held Oct. 28 at the site. The official start of construction came after council voted 6-1 in its Oct. 14 meeting to advance the project to construction with the award of Guaranteed Maximum Price (GMP) #1 to the Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR), HB Construction for $2,656,758 plus tax. The council awarded the CMAR contract and approximately $85,000 to HB Construction for pre-construction services earlier in September. With this approval on Oct. 14, the contractor began the grading/drainage/site prep portion of the design. The eastern side of Oppenheimer Drive is closed for the contractor to use as a staging area. Use of Oppenheimer keeps the nearby site of the former Municipal Building clear for the public to enjoy. Sod from the Judicial-Police-Jail Complex grassy area along Trinity Drive has been transplanted to this area by the Parks Division.
