The CROP Hunger Walk and Turkey Trot is like many events in town — it takes many people to make it a successful event. Our organizational committee includes Cynthia Biddlecomb as Publicity Chair, Wendee Brunish as treasurer, Jeanne Butler as LA Cares representative and deliverer of baked goods to business sponsors, Elisa Enriquez as co-coordinator and committee motivator and T-shirt chair, Ted Williams as race details chair, Lynn Wysocki-Smith as co-coordinator and business sponsor fundraiser and baker and race day volunteer chair.
Additionally, we have many “team captains” and other volunteers including Lynn Finnegan at Trinity on the Hill Episcopal Church, Joyce and Emily Rybarcyk at Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church, Louise Mendius at White Rock United Baptist Church, Vince Chiravalle at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, Rosmarie Frederickson and June Gladney and Linda Burns from LA Cares, Jim Stein of Jim Stein Photograph for his exceptional photographic skills during our race, Stan Kosiewicz as superb master of ceremonies.
Without these behind the scenes workers to help coordinate race details before the race and on the day of the event, we would not be able to hold this excellent family activity.
Many local business sponsors, too many to list here, helped with funds, food and shirts. The Los Alamos Monitor and KRSN radio, have been most generous with their publicity help.
If you cannot attend the CROP Walk and Turkey Trot this year, but would like to contribute to these efforts to combat local and global poverty and hunger, please go to cropwalk.org and select New Mexico, then Los Alamos, and you can donate directly online.
For several years, the Los Alamos event has been the No. 1 or No. 2 CROP Walk in New Mexico for fundraising efforts, even beating out the big cities of Santa Fe and Albuquerque. We would love to keep this a strong tradition!
If you are interested in helping on our committee, or being a team captain at your church or other organization, contact Lynn at 661-9619 or firstname.lastname@example.org, or Elisa at 690-1138, or email@example.com. We would still welcome your offers of help for the day of the race, this Sunday. The actual fun run/walk starts at 2 p.m., but we always need people starting at 1 p.m. to help set up tables, steer participants in the right directions, hang CROP Hunger Walk posters, help keep T-shirts organized, help with the random drawings for free turkeys and pumpkin pies, etc.
If the weather is cold and snowy, don’t let that keep you away. We’ll still meet in the middle school cafeteria. The hardiest of us will go ahead with the walk or run. Food and monetary donations to combat hunger will still be collected. The drawing for turkeys and pies will still take place. So bundle up, bring some non-perishable foods or a generous check made out to CWS/CROP, or to LA Cares, and join us starting at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
