-A A +A

.. A RETURN TO WINTER FOR NORTHERN AND CENTRAL NEW MEXICO WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY MORNING...

AN ARCTIC COLD FRONT... COMBINED WITH A QUICK HITTING UPPER LEVEL DISTURBANCE... WILL BRING A RETURN OF WINTERY WEATHER TO MUCH OF NORTHERN AND CENTRAL NEW MEXICO WEDNESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY MORNING. UNFORTUNATELY... WHILE IT WILL TURN MUCH COLDER... THE PROSPECTS FOR SIGNIFICANT SNOWFALL ANYWHERE ARE PRETTY LOW.

THE ARCTIC COLD FRONT WILL MOVE INTO THE NORTHEAST PLAINS TONIGHT AND PROGRESS SOUTH AND WEST OVERNIGHT TO THE CONTINENTAL DIVIDE THURSDAY MORNING. THE FRIGID AIR BEHIND THE FRONT WILL BE MOST NOTICEABLE ACROSS THE EASTERN PLAINS AND HIGHLANDS WHERE HIGH TEMPERATURES ON THURSDAY WILL BE WELL BELOW FREEZING AND 20 TO 30 DEGREES BELOW NORMAL. LOCALES IN THE RIO GRANDE VALLEY WILL ALSO NOTICE A SIGNIFICANT COOL DOWN... ENHANCED BY STRONG EAST CANYON WINDS WITH GUSTS TO NEAR 40 MPH LATE TONIGHT INTO THURSDAY. WIND CHILL TEMPERATURES OVER CENTRAL AND EASTERN NEW MEXICO ARE EXPECTED TO RANGE FROM 10 ABOVE TO 10 BELOW ZERO THURSDAY... WHILE IN THE TEENS IN THE RIO GRANDE VALLEY. THE COLD AIR WILL LEAVE BY FRIDAY AFTERNOON WITH MUCH MILDER HIGH TEMPERATURES NEAR NORMAL... THEN MOSTLY ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES ARE FORECAST OVER THE WEEKEND.

IN ADDITION TO THE COLD AIR... CHANCES FOR LIGHT SNOW ENTER THE FORECAST LATE WEDNESDAY NIGHT AND PEAK THURSDAY... FAVORING THE NORTHEAST PLAINS AND AREAS FROM THE RATON AND JOHNSON MESAS SOUTH AND WEST ALONG THE EAST SLOPES OF THE SANGRE DE CRISTO MOUNTAINS. SNOW AMOUNTS UNFORTUNATELY WILL ONLY RANGE FROM ONE TO TWO INCHES FROM THE CENTRAL MOUNTAINS TO THE TEXAS BORDER. LOCALIZED TWO TO FOUR INCH AMOUNTS ARE POSSIBLE OVER THE PEAKS OF THE NORTHERN AND EASTERN SANGRE DE CRISTO MOUNTAINS. WHILE A SNOW SHOWER IS POSSIBLE IN THE ALBUQUERQUE FOOTHILLS... NO ACCUMULATION IS EXPECTED. SOME TRAVEL IMPACTS ARE POSSIBLE THURSDAY INTO THURSDAY NIGHT... ESPECIALLY ON INTERSTATE 25 BETWEEN GLORIETA AND RATON PASS. LIGHT SNOW SHOULD TAPER OFF BY LATE THURSDAY NIGHT.
