Dear Editor,
When the Coffehouse at Fuller Lodge opened its doors for the first time on April 7, 1979, it ushered in a whole new way to present classical music concerts in Los Alamos. Listening to music performed by fine professional musicians while seated at small candlelit tables was a concept perfectly suited to the intimacy of the Lodge. Adding to that the attraction of having wonderful desserts from which to choose and the Coffeehouse caught on immediately. It became a regular series run by a musicians’ cooperative, which made the musical and operational decisions. While seven Coffeehouse concerts were presented the first year, the number tapered off to two a year as the coop found that other musical commitments made it impossible to organize that many concerts. The Valentine Coffeehouse remained and was particularly popular. For 28 years, the Coffeehouse was the place to meet friends and hear beautiful music. We gave 112 concerts attended by an estimated 13,000 people. But now the time has come to say goodbye. The Coffeehouse has closed its doors for the last time. Heartfelt thanks to Los Alamos for all the love and support we have received over the years and hope the Coffeehouse at Fuller Lodge will be long remembered as a cherished part of the history of this community.Patricia Broxton, Rosalie Heller and Kay NewnamLos Alamos
