ESPANOLA, N.M. (AP) — Former President Bill Clinton is coming to northern New Mexico to help energize voters for Democratic gubernatorial nominee Diane Denish.
Clinton is to appear at an outdoor rally Thursday afternoon in Espanola, a heavily Hispanic community and traditional Democratic stronghold.
Polls show Denish trailing Republican Susana Martinez in the governor's race.
With the general election less than three weeks away, the Denish campaign is using Clinton's appearance to generate enthusiasm among Hispanics and the Democratic base to ensure supporters turn out to vote.
Hispanics account for about 46 percent of the state's population. But Hispanics represent about 85 percent of Espanola's population.
