The county will kickoff its annual Earth Day recognition with a Clean Up Los Alamos Day Saturday.Vincent Valdez, a solid waste management specialist with the county, said that there are more than 15 groups signed up right now to take part.“We are asking groups to register,” Valdez said. “Go to the county website (www.lac-nm.us/) to register. All you need do is fill out the form and fax (to 662-8051), e-mail it (to vincent.valdez@lacnm.us) or drop it off at LANB or the county landfill office.”Each year the county sponsors the cleanup, a day when the county residents, businesses and civic groups cleanup litter throughout the county. This year, residents are invited to “Clean Up and Protect from Wildfire.”Valdez said that many areas are on the list for cleanup, from the BMX track to parks and roadsides. The county provides free bags and disposal and Los Alamos National Bank sponsors T-shirts and prizes. There will be a volunteer “thank you” picnic at Los Alamos National Bank’s parking lot from noon-2 p.m. with free hot dogs and fun.A new feature this year is that residents get free disposal at the landfill and Overlook Convenience Center on Saturday and Sunday. For more information, call Valdez at 662-8383.
