ALBUQUERQUE (AP) — A liberal advocacy group has launched a campaign against a New Mexico lawmaker for opposing a proposal to increase spending on early childhood education.

The Center for Civic Policy on Thursday began running newspaper ads criticizing Sen. Carlos Cisneros (D-Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, Sandoval) for voting against a proposed constitutional amendment to increase the payout from a state permanent fund to provide more than $100 million annually for early childhood education.

The amendment died after Cisneros and other Finance Committee members voted 8-2 to table it. Cisneros isn’t up for election until 2016.

The group also plans on bombarding the Questa Democrat’s constituents with telephone calls and emails.

Cisneros said he opposed the measure because he believed the permanent fund shouldn’t be tapped and he disagreed with the group’s previous attacks on other lawmakers.
