CHRISTUS St. Vincent Hospital undergoes transition

-A A +A

Business spotlight > Tassin to take over CEO duties on Monday

It has been a state of transition for leadership at the CHRISTUS St. Vincent Regional Medical Center in Santa Fe recently.
Alex Valdez, President and Chief Executive Officer, was promoted to Vice President of International Advocacy for CHRISTUS Health.
Replacing Valdez will be Bruce Tassin, who has served as Chief Operations Officer at the medical center for the past five years. Tassin officially takes over Monday.
“We’re certainly going to miss Alex’s leadership,” said Lillian Montoya-Rael, chair of the medical center Board of Directors.
“Over the last nine years, Alex has led CHRISTUS St. Vincent and positioned the hospital for growth, leaving a strong legacy that is visible not only within the hospital, but one that reaches out, impacting the entire community. We recognize that his talents - his diplomacy in particular - are needed on a broader scale.”
Valdez, a native of Northern New Mexico, was appointed President and CEO in 2004. During his tenure, the hospital expanded into a regional medical center, and in 2008, Valdez helped facilitate the agreement with CHRISTUS Health to create a more sustainable organization.
“First and foremost, I have been incredibly blessed to have been CEO of such a wonderful organization over the last nine years,” Valdez said.
“Never did I imagine that I would find myself in this position and yet I have been incredibly humbled by the opportunity. I hope I have served the community well. When I think about that which matters most, it is that the community has broader access to the highest quality of care as close to home as possible.
“ And, I believe that today, CHRISTUS St. Vincent is in fact a regional medical center prepared to serve people throughout North Central New Mexico.”
“Though I will miss my work here, I am excited to move into a leadership role at CHRISTUS Health and to have the chance to focus on international advocacy. This position will present not only incredible new experiences for me personally, but the opportunity to continue the hard work delivering health care services here and around the world,” he added.
Tassin, meanwhile, has 23 years of experience in hospital administration, and previously served as Chief Operating Officer at CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital in Louisiana.
Tassin has 23 years of experience in hospital administration, and previously served as Chief Operating Officer at CHRISTUS St. Frances Cabrini Hospital in Louisiana.
Valdez and Tassin have worked together to expand community access to health care services. In the past five years, the medical group has acquired the Physicians Medical Center, and completed partnership agreements with New Mexico Cancer Care Associates and the New Mexico Heart Institute.
“I am honored to take on this new role within the hospital, leading a thriving organization that plays such a vital role in serving the Northern New Mexico community,” Tassin said.
“My family and I consider Santa Fe our home and are proud to say our daughter will soon graduate from St. Michael’s High School. I am excited to build on the strong foundation Alex has created for CHRISTUS St. Vincent Regional Medical Center.”
