The 2010 Christmas Sale of the Shop on the Corner thrift store will be from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Dec. 1 at Trinity on the Hill Episcopal Church, lower level. This annual Christmas Sale will feature hundreds of new and gently used Christmas and holiday items, in addition to the thrift shop’s usual wares.
Holiday decorations, festive clothing, toys, books, linens, china and glassware, jewelry and gifts will be some of the items featured at thrift store prices.
Shop on the Corner’s mission is to help Los Alamos residents recycle their usable clothing and household items; to provide an inexpensive market for the Northern New Mexico community to purchase these items on a budget; and to use the proceeds from the thrift store to donate to local and regional charities and to other worthy causes, including the House of Hope Women’s building fund and Haitian earthquake relief.
The popular Christmas Sale raises a significant part of the Shop’s outreach budget each year, along with goodwill and fun for volunteers and shoppers alike.
For consumers who are conscious of their carbon footprint associated with traditional gift giving, buying secondhand items has other advantages.
Goods bought on the secondhand market avoid the high-energy costs of production, packaging and transportation of putting new goods on the shelf.
Purchasing items on the secondhand market extends the useful life of products by giving them another home for someone else to enjoy, and by avoiding the landfill.
And while many products advertise that they are “green,” there is nothing more “green” than buying a recycled treasure from a yard sale, consignment store, or thrift shop.
Shop on the Corner is open most Wednesdays during the school year and is staffed by volunteers. Regular hours are 8:45-11:15 a.m.
On the first Wednesday of the month, the Shop is open until 12:30 p.m.
The Shop is located in the old parish hall on the lower level of Trinity on the Hill Episcopal Church, on Canyon Road near the corner of Diamond Drive.
Donations of items in good to excellent condition may be left in the bin outside the church on the lower level, or brought to the Shop on Wednesday sale days.
Shop on the Corner cannot accept large items such as furniture without prior approval.
