There’s a hidden treasure in Los Alamos and UNM-LA Library Director Dennis Davies-Wilson wants to help you find it. For a community like Los Alamos, there’s no greater treasure than access to information and the academic library at UNM-Los Alamos is open to the public and ready to serve any citizen of New Mexico, Davies-Wilson said.
“All services, except for interlibrary loan, are free to the community,” he said. “Community members interested in interlibrary loan services should contact library staff for information about the process and the fee involved.”
Community members are invited to register as a UNM-LA Library patron. This provides access to approximately 22,500 volumes and a variety of online resources, including 168,000 indexed periodical titles. Patrons older than age 18 are allowed to use the library’s computers. Adults need to accompany those younger than 18, unless they are enrolled at UNM-LA.
“We’re very lucky to have three distinctly different libraries open to the community of Los Alamos: Mesa Public Library, the LANL Library and the UNM-LA Library,” Davies-Wilson said.
One special feature of the UNM-LA Library is its Southwest Collection. The collection contains approximately 1,800 volumes, most of which are first editions and rare materials. “The collection contains many resources about New Mexico and other popular Southwestern topics such as cowboy literature and architecture of the Southwest,” said Davies-Wilson. Some items don’t circulate because of their condition or rarity, but can be examined in the library with advanced notice.
The UNM-LA Library often hosts art and book exhibits, which have included exhibits from community groups. Recent examples include the Poeh Student Art Exhibit from Pojoaque, the “Santa Fe Writer’s Editions” exhibit from Santa Fe, as well as “Icons: Windows on Eternity” and the Kinnikinnick Youth Environmentalists “Green” exhibits from community groups in Los Alamos. Davies-Wilson welcomes inquiries about future exhibit ideas from community groups.
The UNM-LA library is open from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Fridays. It is closed weekends, holidays and between UNM-LA sessions. Call 662-0343 for more information about how to discover the UNM-LA Library.
