Members of the Los Alamos Chamber of Commerce will soon get to know a new personality – one with which Monitor readers are already familiar: Katy Korkos. The chamber’s new member services coordinator has spent the past year covering the county government beat at the Monitor. Now, she will help chamber members make good use of their member benefits, and keep them informed about new membership features.“I feel a strong connection with local businesspeople,” said Korkos, who owned and operated Katherine’s Restaurant in White Rock with her husband David from 1983-2006.She continued, “I feel that I can relate to them. I know what their issues and problems are. I saw the economic roller coaster effects that are magnified here, from lab layoffs and threatened layoffs, from the publicity associated with the Cerro Grande fire and from downturns in the stock market in my 23 years in business.”She said that while working in her restaurant, “I loved being part of people’s lives, the births and weddings, birthdays and memorials.”Korkos remains active in many aspects of her community, including the arts. Her fiber art pieces have shown at the Art Center at Fuller Lodge, the Unitarian Church, Mesa Public Library and other locations both in and outside the county.
