The County Council has issued a proclamation that July is “Cell Phone for Soldiers” month.
The program was founded in 2004 by teenagers Robbie and Brittany Bergquist, who heard about a soldier stationed in Iraq with more than $7,000 in cell phone bills — they raised money through car washes and donations to help the soldier pay his phone bill and when word of their charity made national news, the outpouring of public support was so great that they decided to establish “Cell Phones for Soldiers.”
Since 2004, this national non-profit organization has raised almost $2 million in donations and distributed more than 500,000 prepaid calling cards to soldiers overseas.
