BECKER – Carol Janis Becker, 89, died Thursday, Dec. 6, in Los Alamos. She lived in Los Alamos for the past nine years, moving here from her longtime home in Evanston, Ill. Carol was born in Dubuque, Iowa, and moved to Chicago shortly after high school to seek work. She worked in law and advertising offices, and then for many years working with her husband Sidney in their accounting firm.Carol’s greatest love was music; she began playing piano by ear as a young child, which developed into a lifelong passion.Many happy hours were spent taking lessons at the Chicago Conservatory of Music, accompanying singers, playing in schools and later in nursing homes, and for the enjoyment of all those around her. She was deeply involved in gardening, her faith, and her family. She and her husband Sidney had the most beautiful love for each other.After 64 years of marriage, she is survived by her husband Sidney; her daughters and sons-in-law Naomi Becker and Allen Cogbill of Los Alamos; and Anita and Dr. Michael Miller of Wilmette, Ill.; grandchildren Madeleine and Andre Cogbill, and Daniel and Jonathan Miller. She was preceded in death by her parents, Anschel Jankelewicz and Lily Frischman Janis; her sisters Ruth Galst and Esther Kosdon; and her brother, Joe Janis.Burial has taken place in Chicago. A celebration of Carol’s life will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, at Sombrillo Nursing Home.Donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N.
