The Los Alamos County Parks Division and the Santa Fe National Forest will continue maintenance burning in Bayo Canyon this weekend.
“We hope to finish burning the 150 piles that remain on the snow-covered, north-facing slope of the canyon,” said Craig Martin, the Los Alamos County open space specialist.
Burning is set to begin on Friday around 9 a.m., depending on the ventilation conditions. Burning will continue as conditions permit through Saturday.
Lingering smoke may be visible on Sunday and Monday as fire crews monitor the piles and consolidate the material to reduce the volume of smoke.
The piles are located directly below Deer Trail, Terry Lane and the North Mesa Picnic Grounds.
Martin said a Forest Service crew has been piling material on the south-facing slope of the canyon below Camino Encantado, but these piles will not be burned until there is a significant snowfall, perhaps not until next winter.
