Smith created the Petroglyph Park series between 1985 and 1987, as the ancient petroglyphs on the steep volcanic cliffs, near the artist’s home west of Albuquerque, were threatened by a suburban housing development. Smith and her paintings were part of the struggle to preserve the site sacred to indigenous peoples of the region. It was declared a National Monument in 1990.
