When someone says they had a “great day at the track,” they’re not usually talking about track and field. In this case, however, Larry Baca was.Baca, head coach of the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys, saw his squad grab eight new state qualifying marks at Saturday’s Albuquerque Public Schools Invitational. Saturday’s meet was held at Wilson Stadium.Los Alamos finished second in team competition in its meet, grabbing 82.33 team points. Class AAAA Cibola won with 106.33 points.“There were a lot of good areas,” Baca said. “You can see the PRs (personal records), and a lot of people were really close to PRs. And anytime you qualify that many, it’s just icing on the cake.”Raul Rodriguez picked up a pair of state marks on Saturday in the 100 and 200 meter events. His 10.99 in the 100 was good for second place and his 22.02 in the 200 put him in third place. In the 100, Rodriguez just edged out teammate Ruben Martinez, who had an 11.01, also a state qualifying time. Martinez also improved on his shot put mark by more than two-and-a-half feet.Matt Zocco was also a double-qualifier Saturday, picking up nods in both the 110 hurdles (15.33) and the 300 hurdles (40.32).Allen Pittman and Gareth Gilna both made the state cut in the 1600 meters (4:32.92 and 4:37.38), and both dominated the 800 meters Saturday, going 1-2, well ahead of the next finisher and pushing each other the entire way.Kyle Pittman picked up his second state mark of the season in the 3200, winning the event in 9:57.97, a week after winning and qualifying for the 1600.In all, Los Alamos earned 21 personal best performances. The big showing by the Hilltoppers Saturday came as something of a surprise to Baca.“We didn’t expect a lot out of this meet because we weren’t at full strength,” he said.Los Alamos will have a short week to prepare for its next competition, which will be held in Albuquerque on Thursday.Baca said he hopes to stack his relay events as much as possible and get all four teams qualified.
