The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys tennis team fell in a nip-and-tuck battle with one of the most powerful Class A-AAA programs in the state at home Wednesday.
In what Hilltopper head coach Giri Raichur called one of the most exciting matches his team has been involved with this season, the Las Vegas Robertson Cardinals edged out the Hilltoppers 5-4 at Urban Park.
A pair of Wednesday’s singles contests went to three sets while both sets of the No. 2 doubles contest between Robertson’s Kevin Keiner/Amadeo Lopez and Los Alamos’ Matt Whicker/Stephen Townsley went into tiebreakers.
Robertson is the two-time defending A-AAA champion and has won state three times since 2003.
The Hilltoppers’ No. 1 single, Patrick Raichur, went to a third set against Robertson’s Keiner. Keiner took the first set Keiner 6-4 before Raichur came back to win the second set 6-4. Keiner, however, would go on to win the match with a 6-4 decision in the third set.
At No. 4 singles, Los Alamos’ Stephen Townsley bounced back from a first-set loss to beat Lopez 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 and keep Los Alamos in contention against the Cardinals.
Los Alamos’ five and six singles — Chase Havemann and Dominic Lucido — also won to keep the match even at 3-3 in singles play.
