After a one-year hiatus, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys soccer team got back to championship form Thursday.
The Hilltoppers reclaimed the District 2AAAA championship Thursday with their 6-0 win over the Bernalillo Spartans. With the win, the Hilltoppers clinched all conceivable tiebreakers over the second-place Capital Jaguars.
Forward Daniel Rodriguez scored a pair of goals in Thursday’s game and four others got in the scoring action at Bernalillo to lead the Hilltoppers (13-4 overall, 6-0 in 2AAAA) to the win and recapturing of the championship won by Taos in 2007.
“It’s nice,” Los Alamos head coach Evan Gartz said. “We didn’t play too good (Thursday). The field was horrible, we couldn’t get good touch on the ball and we were just thinking about scoring too much. We’d get the ball, go down the field and not do too much with it.”
Nevertheless, Los Alamos earned its fourth win in district with at least a four-goal margin, as well as its fourth district shutout.
Andre Appert, Dion Obermeyer, Jon Thoma and Davis Anson all picked up goals for the Hilltoppers in Thursday’s win.
“Everyone got a lot of playing time,” Gartz said. “We started getting people in around the middle of the first half. We were up two goals so we could get a lot of guys in.”
