The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys golf team had a solid opening to its spring 2010 season Monday.
The Hilltoppers finished in third place in the team standings at Monday’s Bernalillo Invitational. The tournament was played at Santa Ana Golf Course.
Los Alamos shot 361 as a team, placing it in the top three Monday. Rio Rancho Cleveland won Monday’s team title and Bernalillo, Los Alamos District 2AAAA opponent and defending district champion, finished second in the team standings.
In all, 11 teams took part in the tournament.
Pacing Los Alamos Monday was senior Henry Stam, who shot an 84. Two strokes behind Stam was Thomas Herrera.
“This was a solid effort by the boys considering that they have not had their home course to practice on and playing time has been very limited for them,” Hilltopper head coach John Stam said of Monday’s effort.
Following Stam and Herrera were Woody Moss, who finished with a 94, Tim Branch, who carded a 97, and Jin Park, who shot 100 on the day.
The Hilltoppers finished 7 strokes ahead of fourth-place Raton and 23 strokes ahead of Taos, the other District 2AAAA team competing in Monday’s tournament.
Los Alamos has four other tournaments scheduled for the spring season before the District 2AAAA championship tournament. It will next be in action April 9 when it plays in Santa Fe.
