Boys golf: LA holds off Raton for 2nd at Capital City

The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys golf team finished as the runner-up at Monday’s Capital City Invitational.
Los Alamos held off Raton by one stroke in team competition to pick up the runner-up spot at the tournament, held at the Marty Sanchez Links de Santa Fe.
The Hilltoppers finished with a solid team score of 327 while Raton, paced by overall individual winner Joe Apache, earned a 328.
Thomas Herrera, the Hilltoppers’ top player, finished fourth in the individual competition Monday. Herrera finished with a 2-over 74.
Two-time defending Class 3A state champion St. Michael’s finished the tournament with a 302 to take the team title. Apache shot a red-hot 3-under par to win the individual title.
Jin Park, a junior for the Hilltoppers, scored an eagle on the par-4 fifth hole en route to his score of 81.
Also for Los Alamos, Tim Branch shot an 84. Jonnie Osden had an 88 and Brett Snow finished with a 106.
Two of Los Alamos’ four district opponents competed in the tournament. Santa Fe finished with a team score of 365 and Capital had a 427, finishing last among the seven competing squads.
