The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys golf team grabbed their second top-four finish of the spring golf season at Monday’s Capital City Invitational.

Meanwhile, Los Alamos sophomore Thomas Herrera took home the top individual honor Monday.

Los Alamos’ boys finished second at the tournament, hosted by the Santa Fe Demons at Santa Fe Country Club Monday. As a team, the Hilltoppers shot a 357, putting them behind the host Demons, who turned in a 331.

Herrera finished with a 78 to win the event, which also earned him a qualifying leg for the state Class AAAA tournament. The state tournament is scheduled for mid-May in Socorro.

It was the second individual leg earned by the Hilltoppers in the 2008-09 season. Henry Stam picked up an individual qualifying leg at Towa Golf Course a week earlier.

In team competition, Raton finished third, 12 strokes behind Los Alamos. Raton was followed by Las Vegas Robertson (399), East Mountain (408) and West Las Vegas (463).

Also for the Hilltoppers Monday, Tim Branch shot an 88, placing him second among the team. Kory Nelson carded a 93, followed by Stam’s 98 and Jin Park’s 103.

John Baca of Los Alamos played as an individual entry, finishing with a 102.
