BERNALILLO — In a back-and-forth contest Wednesday night, the final swing went the way of the Los Alamos Hilltoppers. With just 16 seconds remaining in a big District 2AAAA boys basketball game, Chris Hejde hit a 10-foot jumper to give Los Alamos a one-point edge. Los Alamos got the ball back on the other end of the floor and Ben Allen canned a pair of free throws with 2.9 seconds remaining to ice a big 79-76 win against the Bernalillo Spartans. The win was a big one in several ways. Not only was it a district road win against an underrated opponent, not only did it keep the Hilltoppers in second-place in the 2AAAA regular season title race, but it was accomplished without the aid of center Alex Kirk, who sat out with the ankle injury he suffered Jan. 29 against Capital.“It was just a good win,” Hilltopper guard Michael Helland said. “It’s tough not having Alex, but we came through. We hung tough.”Without Kirk, the team’s leading scorer throughout this season, the ’Toppers had to find other sources for their offense. The big source Wednesday night was Ben Allen, who was lights-out all evening.
